Understanding The Church Pension Fund Board of Trustees

What is the role of The Church Pension Fund Board of Trustees?

With input from the Church Pension Group’s (CPG) Executive Leadership Team, The Church Pension Fund Board of Trustees (CPF Board) makes critical policy decisions affecting investment strategy, pensions, and other benefits and services. It oversees the strategic direction of the varied businesses that make up CPG, while ensuring that the financial strength of the organization remains intact.

How many individuals serve on the CPF Board?

Governance of The Church Pension Fund is provided by a 25-member board of trustees, 24 of whom are elected by the General Convention of The Episcopal Church. CPF’s CEO and President, Mary Kate Wold, is elected by the CPF Board and serves as the 25th trustee.

What is the background of the individuals who serve on the CPF Board?

The participation on the CPF Board of ordained Church leaders and lay leaders who are experienced investment managers, attorneys, and business and financial professionals enriches its work.

It is essential to bring the most expert and thoughtful advice available to the Church to the board’s deliberations. The complexity of CPG’s businesses and the legal responsibilities associated with the work of the CPF Board require that each trustee be informed and fully engaged.

What is the time commitment required of those who serve on the CPF Board?

CPF Board members serve on the board and on board committees. Board meetings are usually (but not always) scheduled in conjunction with committee meetings, which together require a commitment of about three days, four times per year. Trustees may also participate in conference calls and review reports, financial statements, and other materials in advance of meetings.
